Top College Degrees For Guaranteed Success
Top College Degrees are typically judged by the income potential of the degree. When speaking of specific training and certification or licensure, just about any college degree will have decent earning potential. Some are much better than others. Medical Doctors and Lawyers always seem to come to mind first but don't forget about accountants, engineers, and nurses.
Top College Degrees Equate To Higher Earning
The least financially rewarding college degrees are usually the more broader fields of study such as English, history, health, etc. A recent search turned up an opinion of one writer that the top 3 most useless college degrees were English/literature, arts/theater, and Woman's or African-American studies. It should be stated that these all could be applied to a teaching degree, but by their own merits, they fail as a degree major that lead to employment and financial prosperity and therefore don't make the list of Top College Degrees.
I would like to make it clear that the previous statements are not to be construed as sexist or racist. The content of these courses might hold great value education-wise but the course content doesn't translate into a job or career that can provide a good living. With that in mind, top college degrees may hold different meanings for different people. For example, succeeding in the theater or arts fields is usually dependent on talent. The last thing an agent, talent scout, casting director, gallery owner, etc. is going to ask is whether or not you have a degree in the arts or in theater. There are many fields such as these where "on the job training" is more important than having a college degree.
Top College Degrees Make Advancement Possible
There are many "trades" that rely more on experience than education however, a college degree in any one of the many engineering fields will typically prepare the graduate for an upper level position and definitely qualifies as a top college degree. It is for this reason that many degrees include some aspect of business education and management. With the advent of the relatively new "computer age", computer technicians and IT professionals will most likely be in high demand for years to come. These training programs often begin with an Associates Degree which in and of itself can prepare a graduate for an entry level job as a computer technician.
It should be noted that in general, the higher the degree level, the higher the income potential depending on the field. Most Bachelors Degree holders will out earn an Associates Degree holder, A Master's Degree out earns a Bachelor's, and a Doctoral Degree out earns a Master's. What needs to be remembered in all this is the additional cost of pursuing higher degree levels. It is a prudent exercise to research and weigh the potential cost of a degree against the potential income that could be earned by employment in the degree field. Sometimes the numbers won't add up. It pays to do a little research.
When talking about top college degrees, it is inevitable that the talk turns to some of the most wealthy Americans who coincidentally all dropped out of college.
- Bill Gates - Microsoft
- Steve Jobs - Apple
- Michael Dell - Dell Computers
There are others of course but this list carries a big punch. One thing that is worth remembering is that these people were all very smart, they all dropped out of college so they did at least get some education, and they were all blessed with an entreprenurial spirit. You might say they are the exception that proves the rule (that's never made sense to me).
To sum everything up:
- A college degree typically leads to higher earning power depending on the field
- The higher the degree, the higher the earning potential
- There are degrees that will end up costing more than they are worth in the job market
- Don't compare yourself to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. They were in the right place at the right time with the right knowledge and foresight.
