The Training and Skills You Need to Become a Forensic Accountant
If you ask somebody what their job or profession is, and after they've answered, you will probably have a general idea of what they do. Common terms are something we associate with; it helps us to feel knowledgeable about the world around us.

What if I asked you this question, "Do you know what a forensic accountant does?"

Since I associate forensics with science and accounting with numbers, I would have to say they count and number bones. Well, if you thought that too, we'd both be wrong. A forensic accountant does use their knowledge of accounting, but they are also able to use investigation techniques to help solve financial and business problems.

Still sound boring?

Just wait.

What does it take to become a forensic accountant?

You will have to have a bachelor's degree in accounting. It will also help to be a CPA, Certified Public Accountant. You may want to add CFE, Certified Fraud Examiner to your list of credentials.

You will need to possess a strong attention to detail. Most people have this trait when working in this field, but having an investigative mind is an asset to your profession. It does take an education in accounting but it also takes somebody who has a desire to help solve crimes.
You could be working bankruptcy, money laundering, and even capital crime cases. Anything that has to do with business dealings, analytical research and being allowed to be curious while working is what sets you apart from a regular accountant. You'll still be using your accounting skills but as more of an investigator.

Are you getting interested now?

Why would you want to be a forensic accountant?

Why not?

It would surely be one of those interesting careers that would cause people to ask questions once you've told them; and who doesn't like to tell people about what they do for a living, especially when it is intriguing.

You would be working with legal issues such as money laundering and fraud. Forensic accounts often look over other peoples work too to see if any avenues haven't been explored, they are always hunting for patterns. They are allowed to be investigative and still work within the scope of their profession. Since a forensic accountant deals with many legal cases, they can also participate as expert witnesses.

If you watch Law & Order: CI you may have seen a character named Leon Martel. He plays a forensic accountant on the show. Television helps to recognize unknown professional and there is no doubt that those who do work in this field know the importance of their contribution. There's no guarantee that a spin off show will be produced based on this character, but its interesting to see what a forensic accountant does while assisting law enforcement.

It is sounding better and better isn't it?

How rewarding is a career as a forensic accountant?

It's very rewarding. You'll be able to work for insurance companies, financial institutions, local law enforcement or even the FBI.

If you love to join this rewarding profession, I encourage you to do more research on the web. You can do this by visiting websites that cover the profession in more detail.

  1. QUESTION:
Criminal justice degree jobs that dont reqired you to shave your facial hair?
I have a medical shaving condition and i don't want to get permante lazer removal of my facial so any suggestions as far as jobs associated with the degree that don't have strict shave policy

    • ANSWER:
Associated with a criminal justice degree? nothing I can think of. Of course I think it is a worthless degree for future cops. Probation/parole will accept an application but lots will be applying with degrees in soc and psych which is a better fit. In my state corrections allows a beard but county corrections does not.
If you want a job in the system as a cop you look for a department that allow facial hair, there are a number around the country.
I have good old pseudofolliculitis barbae (bumps) myself.
My department I just had to get through academy (6 months) shaving and I could then apply for a medical release to have a short beard.
Does have an affect on the job since you cannot be in certain units because you cannot wear a gas mask. I started shaving again and got used to mild cortisone cream.

  2. QUESTION:
criminal justice degree jobs that dont reqired you to shave your facial hair?
I have a medical shaving condition and i don't want to get permante lazer removal of my facial so any suggestions as far as jobs associated with the degree that don't have strict shave policy

    • ANSWER:
While it is true that an existing job would keep you with a medical exemption, a department that has a policy against beards may hesitate to hire you in the first place. You may want to check for an agency that allows facial hair in the first place. Then, it would not be an issue at all.
      Good luck.

What kind of jobs is there with Criminal Justice degree without becoming sworn officers?
I dont want to become sworn officer but I want to work in criminal justice related, something like CSI, crime scene technician, evidence technician. I understand that you need science but will I get those kind of jobs with criminal justice degree?

    • ANSWER:
You know what you qualify for with a degree in criminal justice as per crime scene investigations? You qualify to stand there and make sure people don't come onto the crime scene... that's about it.

If you want to work in crime scene investigations and such, you'll need a science degree, and at least a masters for anything besides taking pictures or bagging stuff.

      Anthropology, chemistry, biology, etc...

      *edit*
As for what kind of jobs you can get with the criminal justice degree, not much. It's an entry level degree designed for people pursuing a law degree, and yet advertised for people that want to be cops. A masters in one of the criminal justice sub-fields would get you into more stuff, but you would need to be specific.

  7. QUESTION:
What are good jobs for criminal justice degree?
I am currently working on a master's degree in criminal justice. Is this a good degree? What are some good jobs that want this degree? Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice. I decided early on that being a Police Officer was not for me. I did an internship with probation/parole during college. My first job out of college was at a Residential Treatment Center for Juveniles as a Residential Counselor. This was a high stress job that paid very poorly. I primarily worked with inner city kids on probation from Minneapolis, MN. All of them had some type of gang affiliation. I learned a lot working at this job but I burned out from it. 16+ hour shifts because the staff turnover was so poor. I worked there for about 10 months. From there I worked as a Program Coordinator of a group home for developmentally disabled sex offenders. This was a very interesting job, I would recommend it as a good job to gain experience in the field. I did that for over a year and got promoted within the company.

I can also mention some of my friends from college. Two of them are police officers, one works in the prison system, one works in probation. Law school is an option. You can get your masters in Social Work and work in the Social Services field-they like people with criminal justice backgrounds! Hope this helps!

  8. QUESTION:
What kind of career and jobs can you get starting out with a criminal justice degree?
What kind of career and jobs can you get starting out with a criminal justice degree? The only job I read you could get upon receiving a B.S. in criminal justice is corrections officer making about 13.67/hr plus benefits. Are there any other jobs you can get starting out? And what about homeland security jobs if you have a B.S. in homeland security?

    • ANSWER:
not much at all. I have a B.S. in Criminal Justice, as well. It'll look good if you plan on becoming a cop.

  10. QUESTION:
what type of criminal justice jobs can i get with an associates degree?
I am working on getting my associates degree in criminal justice and would like to work towards being a juvenile probation officer but everything that i have found on this type of job says that you need to have a bachelors degree so what can i do to work my way up to being a juvenile probation officer without a bachelors degree?

    • ANSWER:
Depending on your state, you might be able to get a position in a Juvenile Detention Center or possibly in a Training School. Positions are hard to come by with the economy the way it is (alot of very qualified people are looking for positions and there are just not enough jobs out there) The position will be entry level and you will not get paid very much, but at least you will have an opportunity to earn some money and possibly study at the same time for your 4 year degree.

You will need a 4 year degree. I spent alot of time looking around and every state I looked into requires a 4 year degree for a JPO position. The positions can be highly competetive.

Since you are going the Criminal Justice route, take as many Human Services / Social Work / Counseling / and Substance Abuse elective hours that you can, it will be helpful for preparing you to work in the field.

To boost your expereince level, you can try volunteering at a Facility. You could pursue an interenship at a local Juvenile Probation Office. You could spend a year as an Americorp Volunteer working with at risk youth.

  11. QUESTION:
Good jobs for criminal justice degree?
I thought about being a police officer, but people always told me they don't make that much. I hear about other jobs with a criminal justice degree, and I hear they don't get paid well. What types of jobs and how can you get jobs with a criminal justice degree?
I am considering a degree in criminal justice, but what types of jobs are there with no experience other than a police officer. It seems most employers want experience, but how can you get experience if no one gives you a chance. Anyone who has a success story or information I would love to hear it. Thank you.

  13. QUESTION:
are there any jobs in the criminal justice field that actually require a criminal justice degree?
so i was researching the other day and a lot of police officers on yahoo answers tell me how criminal juistice is a useless degree. its cuz jobs in the criminal juistice field dont even require a crim justice degree. for example to be a cop u just need 60 college credits and it doenst matter what the major is in. to be a swat or a detective you need experience as a cop. to be a prosecutor you pass teh bar exam. to be a corrections officer or court officer you need to have a high school degree and pass the exam. for fbi agent you need either a juris doctor, accountancy or computer science degree which i found odd. lastly most criminal justice jobs require you to have a hs diploma or 60 credits in any field. so my question is are there any jobs in the criminal jusitce field that speciificlly require criminal justice as a major.

    • ANSWER:
NO, but the degree gives you knowledge of the system that you cannot gain by working and it enhances your ability for raises and promotions. I have a Bachelors degree in the administration of justice and a masters in vocational education they have allowed me to teach and to earn More.

  14. QUESTION:
Criminal justice degree - jobs in phoenix?
My family is looking to relocate to Phoenix ASAP, but due to the economy we are almost refusing to unless a job is secured. Unfortunately it also seems that many places do not want to hire anyone from out of state. So I'm trying to rack my brain, intensify my research and stop relying on the typical job websites and the azcentral.com site for finding a job. I have a degree in criminal justice with experience in golf resort security. Also have experience with landscaping.
Besides typical places I could look (golf resorts, hotel security, hospital security) - do you have any other ideas as far as what's out in the Phoenix area? Not looking to do the "rent-a-cop" deal either.

    • ANSWER:
Without completing P.O.S.T. (police academy) your probably going to being doing a job that is support staff. Investigators and detectives are real cops that have gone through the police training and are trained to carry a weapon and use force. They are also undergo rigorous physical testing in order to work in the field.

There are plenty of support staff jobs and any experience would contribute, but don't expect to work the streets unless you have your P.O.S.T. training. Mind you, I have done a lot of these things without a degree or trainiing. Some examples of support staff are given:

      Parking enforcement Officer
      Vehicle abatement Officer
      Animal Control Officer
      Public Service Office (PSO)
      Community Service Officer (CSO)

if you have a criminal justice degree, what would be your top 5 list of jobs to have?
Just a question. Doing a research project on prospective jobs for people with criminal justice degrees. I am currently attaining one and would like your opinion.

    • ANSWER:
I am not a criminal justice major but I have had two close friends who have earned a degree in the field. One actually does work for law enforcement in Washington D.C., however the other now has a desk job at a mechanical engineering company. Criminal Justice can be a sketchy field since there are such a high number of individuals focused on it. If it is what you're interested in... go for it. I would assume that the majority of criminal justice majors are looking for some work in the legal system, whether it is law enforcement, or court setting. If someone is interested in the field of investigation, I would actually advise majoring in a biological field since most crime scene investigation involves lab work. As I pointed out earlier however, a degree in criminal justice doesn't necessarily gaurantee a job in the legal field. Some one once told me after graduation, one looks at the job market in a different light and can pursue something totally irrelavent to what he or she majored in.

  28. QUESTION:
What types of jobs can you get with an undergraduate degree in criminal justice?
If a person majors in criminal justice, is that person preparing himself for a job in upper level law enforcement agencies (FBI, CIA, US Marshalls, Secret Service, etc)? Do some people with degrees in criminal justice get screwed over and have to become normal small town police officers? I'm majoring in criminal justice right now. I definitely do not want to be an ordinary police officer. My dream job would be to work for one of those top-tier law enforcement agencies that I listed. Is a criminal justice degree on target? Or should I consider something else?

    • ANSWER:
A Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice can be used to get into both local and federal law enforcement. The FBI requires at least a degree and two or three years of relevant law enforcement experience to even apply. The CIA is not considered law enforcement--your chances of being hired there hinge largely on your foreign language and travel experience. A Bachelor's degree (in any field) is the standard requirement to apply for any 1811 Criminal Investigator "Special Agent" position with agencies like the Secret Service, DEA, ATF, ICE, DSS, Marshall Service, etc. Many recent grads (especially outstanding scholars) are hired for those positions straight out of college. However, as competition is fierce, most 1811s usually did a few years in lower level Federal law enforcement positions like Park or Capitol Police Officer, Border Patrol Agent, CBP Officer, or Immigration Enforcement Agent, before getting picked up as a Special Agent. If your goal is to ultimately become a Special Agent in one of the agencies you listed then finish your degree with as high a GPA possible and then go to www.usajobs.gov to see what Federal law enforcement positions are hiring. If there are no open 1811 application drives (and chances are there will not be) then try to get onto one of the lower level law enforcement jobs I listed above. Any one of them would be a good stepping stone to a Special Agent position. And by the way many, if not most, Special Agents I have known had Criminal Justice degrees. So, no a CJ degree will not maroon you in local law enforcement.

  29. QUESTION:
Jobs in the military with a criminal justice degree?

  32. QUESTION:
What are a list of jobs with a criminal justice degree?
i keep getting told there are many options out there, i just would like to know what they are..atleast maybe a good website to find them? thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
There are positions within the arena of criminal justice other than peace officer, like probation, corrections, juvenile justice positions, and possibly some positions more closely aligned with social work (like pretrial assessment). There are numerous books available that identify positions closely aligned with criminal justice. And, there are web sites, a quick check came up with: http://www.ask.com/bar?q=criminal+justice+careers&page=1&qsrc=178&ab=4&u=http%3A%2F%2Fcareers.cua.edu%2Fhandouts%2Fcriminaljusticecareers.htm.

Many major police and state and federal agencies employ criminal intelligence analysts. These positions are generally limited, therefore they may be more difficult to get than a peace officer position. And, you will probably be competing against former military intelligence personnel. You may have to start at an administrative position and work your way into the intel position. All state and local agencies employ dispatchers and other administrative personnel.

A crime analyst may be deal with crime statistics (usually computerized) in such a manner as to provide decision-making advice on how to deploy personnel and implement programs designed to address crime problems. A criminal intelligence analyst looks at individual crimes or a specific type of crime in an effort to disclose linkages to people, places, or things. Some may do both. Many analyst positions are taken by former military intel types.

Some universities offer degrees in intelligence analysis. The American Public Univ System (apus.edu) is an accredited online university that offers 4yr and graduate degrees in intelligence and public safety (pertinent to physical security occupations).

Intelligence analysis consists mainly of review of documents, seeking connections and logical inferences in an effort to predict future events or establish prior associations. Whether or not it is interesting or boring varies from person to person, and may involve computer aided analysis. Intelligence analysis is generally divided into two classes, strategic and tactical. Strategic intelligence looks at the “big picture” with a longer-term focus, allowing prediction of future enforcement needs; while tactical intelligence concerns more immediate activities of specific offenders or organizations.

There are also physical security positions in government and in the private sector that do not have physical fitness requirements. Any private company of any sized either contracts for or employs security of some sort. ASIS International (asisonline.org) is a private security organization that provides certifications in several areas of security.

Each state has a process for licensing private investigators, check the internet to identify the appropriate state agency (Dept of Public Safety in TX) for licensing requirements, and for a state PI association that sponsors training. A licensed agency may employ individuals as trainees.

Get a graduate degree and teach in a community college, or conduct research. Check the American Society of Criminology website: http://www.asc41.com/.

What kind of jobs could one get with a Criminal Justice degree?
Other than being a Police officer, or corrections officer, what kind of other careers could one pursure with a Criminal Justice degree?

I have heard the FBI really doesn't want people with CJ degrees, they want accounting majors and computer science, etc, but what about other Federal Law Enforcement agencies like the ATF, DEA, Marshal service, etc?

Would they be interested in someone with a degree in Criminal Justice?

    • ANSWER:
Not to burst your bubble here, but Criminal Justice degrees are just about worthless today (I am not being mean but that degree is pretty much a catch all degree for those that do not have any clue what they want to be), so that limits your field of what you can do.

ATF, Secret Serve will look at it as a degree but it will not hold much water with them

I know your instructors and counselors will tell you different, that is what they are paid to say, but the truth is there are so many Criminal Justice degrees out there now they are diluted as to worth because verybody is taking that course because it is easy to get a degree in

  39. QUESTION:
What jobs can I get with a degree in criminal justice?
I am really really interested in joining the FBI to be a special agent, but I've heard that that is very hard to get into and that they do whole background checks on your family and everything. I'm a college freshman right now and I'm pretty set on getting a criminal justice and criminology degree. So, what can I do with a criminal justice degree if I don't get to go into the FBI? I don't want to be a police officer or anything of that sort. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If you get a masters you can teach other losers at a community college.
You might be able to find a job somewhere doing things like analyzing crime statistics.

Both degrees need graduate work to get a job in the actual field. A bachelors means nothing as far as cj or criminology.

Well beyond family the FBI will never accept cj. You need law, accountancy, linguistics or deep computer architecture just to get started for consideration.

    • ANSWER:
listen any of the armed forces would take you with out a degree so... that said if you are still in school and want to go into the military do yourself a favor and take ROTC. Yes you may have the opportunity later OCS but it is far harder then going to your admissions building and saying I want to take ROTC. If you are JR or Sr. then you might still be ok if you go gard - reserves do basic during summer... so you can avoid the first 2 of ROTC. That said you have AG, - Adjutants General, CID, Psy Ops, Intell, Counter Intel... all of which might be of interest to you. Of course that will depend on how you score on your ASVAB's and other tests. Plus if your credit etc... if it ok for a clearance.

      good luck

  43. QUESTION:
What kinds of criminal justice jobs don't need physical strength?
I'm not in bad shape, but I'm in my late 30s and am getting a criminal justice degree in a year and a half. I was hoping to be a corrections officer, but I'm noticing that a lot of places you need to apply before your 37th birthday, and that will cut me out by the time I finish school.
I don't want to work in a boring office all day. Maybe a probation officer? A bailiff?
Um, not meter maid, okay... I got hired for that right out of high school (but didn't take the job.) Something I can do with a university degree. :P

    • ANSWER:
There are clerical jobs in law enforcement that aren't very physically demanding. I don't remember what its called, but you can settle disputes between inmates and guards and investigate lawsuits by inmates. If you have any other mechanical skills you could teach in a prison, food service, prison clergy, run AA meetings, etc. Almost anything you can do on the "outside" is usually needed on the "inside".

  44. QUESTION:
What jobs can you get with a criminal justice degree, without attending a police academy?
I don't know where to look exactly to figure this out. I want to go to school for criminal justice, but everyone I have talked to about this says I have to attend a police academy. Any ideas? Anyone? I would appreciate it

    • ANSWER:
A criminal jusitce degree is education, a police academy is training, the two are separate functions. Many colleges offer CJ degrees. A CJ degree is not required to get a job in law enforcement. There are other positions within the arena of criminal justice other than peace officer, like probation, corrections, juvenile justice positions, and possibly some positions more closely aligned with social work (like pretrial assessment).

There are also physical security positions in government and in the private sector that do not have physical fitness requirements. ASIS International (asisonline.org) is a private security organization that provides certifications in several areas of security.

  46. QUESTION:
Jobs that require a criminal justice/law enforcement degree?
What specific jobs REQUIRE you to get a degree in criminal justice/law enforcement?
    -
Also I know you don't need that degree to be a police officer but if I would get that degree would I get payed more? And have better chances to get promoted?

    • ANSWER:
I am not aware of any jobs that require a CJ degree. Even the job description for college level CJ instructor usually says "Masters Degree in Criminal Justice OR related field".
While any college degree will help you get your foot in the door in an agency, a CJ degree shows that you are serious about the profession. It also shows that you have specific education beyond that which the Academy will teach and a deeper understanding of the issues specific to law enforcement.
Every department/agency has it's own contract that dictates pay rates. My department offered a yearly "Education Bonus" based on the highest degree received, regardless of major. Others have an increase in hourly base pay. Massachusetts has the "Quin Bill", which adds different percentages to an officer's base pay, depending on their highest degree earned. You may want to contact any departments you are interested in joining to find out about their specific contracts.
Many departments have their own web sites with this information listed.

  47. QUESTION:
Can you find jobs with a criminal justice degree if you have been arrested?

    • ANSWER:
      Probably.

But it ain't like "Charlies Angels", the career criminal is not really the first choice in most situations, ideally.

For instance, I know of a cop who date rape drugged another cop to get that drugged cop to shoot in the HEAD another cop (me). Personally, I think that was wrong even though the "powers that be" gave that person a business license to start a "security" firm !

Yes, I am saying Bangor Maine has a problem with organized crime in the courts, police, the district attorney's office and etc.

So in SOME locations these organized criminals will utterly dominate for untoward periods of time(like EVERYONE KNOWS they did in Iraq during Saddam's day ).

But every so often, an honest place Like Dayton Ohio will allow a Henry Ford a patent, and the WORLD will be a better place.

Stop voting neo-ConSERFative you morons ! They are universally crooked as all get-out.

  48. QUESTION:
Criminal Justice Degree? What is the schooling like to get it? What jobs can I use it for??? Plz Help!!!?
What is included under the category of criminal justice? (like what does crimanal justice mean?) If I go to college and get a degree in criminal justice what kind of jobs could I get? What kind of classes in college would I have to take? How hard would those classes be? Please help. I'm just stressing about my future and I'm trying to understand all my options before I decide what I want to do. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
--- A Criminal Justice Degree is what is called a comprehensive degree. Very basically put it includes portions from 3 different degree programs: Psychology, Sociology, and Political Science. It is a 4 year degree and can be used to apply towards requirements for just about any entry level law enforcement position.
--- The classes would be selected from each of the 3 degree programs I listed above. Class examples for your first year might be Psych 100 Basic psych; Psych 102, abnormal psych; Sociology 100 and 102, basic soc. Basically your first year will be first and second year selections from those 3 programs. In order to find out exactly which ones you need to go to the University you are considering and examine their course catalog. Every State and school is a bit different so you need to go to your school and look up the catalog..
--- Because it is a comprehensive degree you can actually take many classes at first and have them still apply to it. However if you are stressing so much then stop in and visit your school advisor, that is what they are there for. If this is stressing to you then Law Enforcement may not be the field for you as the LE field is constantly stressing.
--- Also, a crim Justice degree is one that deals mostly in theory, not hands on real study. For that you would need to find a 4 year Police Sciences Degree as the one at the U of Minnesota/ Bemidji.

Also making sure i'm not wasting my time over the next 4 years only to find out there are no jobs in this field for colored blind people.
Oh and for what its worth my state is MA

    • ANSWER:
Well first off, you won't be able to tell what color your suspect is. So that means you can't be a cop. You wouldn't be able to give an accurate description of a perp. Everything else should be ok though.
