    I am currently a senior student studying electrical engineering. I have a 3.9 gpa with only two semesters left. Because I plan to work after I graduate, I was thinking of applying to Stanford's online masters degree for an electrical engineering. Do you think it holds the same value as if i where to take normal classes at the university?

      Some folks here would have you believe that an in-the-seat degree from "local state U" will be considered more highly than will an online degree from Stanford University. Solely on the basis of online vs in-the-seat.

      It's just not that simple or cut and dry. Ask yourself - would you hire the in-the-seat grad from the tier 4 state U in your state or the online grad from Stanford if all other qualifications were the same just because the in-the-seat grad sat in a classroom of questionable quality?

      Of course, attending Stanford in-the-seat would be better -- but do we really think that Stanford U would put their name on a degree if they didn't think that you would get the material covered? Really?

      So equal to "normal classes at the university"? Depends on which university. UPhoenix has classroom courses - think they're equal to Stanford's online courses? I don't. So what matters here is not online vs classroom (especially not at the master's level) but instead the quality of the college awarding the degree. Bad college = worthless degree; great college = valuable degree. It's really (partly) as simple as that.

      There is only one ABET-accredited online degree in Civil Engineering in the USA. It is offered by University of North Dakota. Study requires short-term trips to Grand Forks, ND, for labs and seminars.

    Is an online degree in civil engineering equivalent to a regular one gotten in an offline school?
    I gotten an online degree for my business associates, yet I always had a love for civil engineering, and was thinking about going back to online school for an associates in it while I worked full time to support myself independently. Would it be harder for me to find work in the civil engineering field with that kind of degree, obtained online, than in a traditional setting?

      As a civil engineer, I can honestly say that no company I know of would even consider looking at a candidate with an online civil engineering degree. In fact, I don't think that such degrees even exist! Most - no, all companies are interested in engineering candidates with degrees from ABET accredited engineering programs, and there's no way that ABET would accredit an on-line program. If you do come across some place that is advertising an accredited on-line civil engineering degree, treat it like "Bob's Backyard College of Engineering" and run away because it's a scam.

      If you're interested in getting a civil engineering degree, you'll probably have to do it the old-fashioned way. But no fear!! - I studied with several folks who were working their ways through school and were a little older, and they all did great! The one advantage that engineering progams in general seem to have is lots of scholarships. Even if you start empty-handed in most civil engineering programs, if you keep high grades and seek to get involved a little bit extracurricularly, you shouldn't have a problem getting scholarships.

Accreditation is certification that the educational program (s) at a school meet a certain level of quality.       There are currently many well paid jobs for software engineers in both commercial and industrial settings. Gaining a degree would demonstrate your technical understanding and help you secure an entry-level position. Degrees are expensive to obtain.

      Unfortunately, there are scam-courses on the internet too.

      A range of respected universities are now offering on-line degrees. Essentially, the course shadows the progress of a semesterised-course, and you participate via the internet using video and email.

      At the end of the course, you may be expected to physically attend an examination centre, or submit a coursework in lieu of exam.

      Before reaching this point, the University would understandably require settlement of course fees.

      While anyone can read and see the online course materials, they will not get the benefit of access to the class tutor for any questions that may arise. You must contact the University course offices to discuss payment for active participation.

18. QUESTION:
    Is there any respectable universities that offer a BSE Chemical Engineering degree online "distance learning"?
    I am an adult who works shift work (12.5 hr days). I already have an AAS degree and would like to complete a BSE degree but have to work around my employer and the shift schedule...makes it impossible to go to a regular university and since I work 7am to 7:30pm, it is almost impossible to find classes in the evening that work for me. I can't afford to quit my current job and my employer is inflexible.

      I'm a faculty member of an engineering school in a "respectable university", but the following is strictly IMHO.

      As you may suspect, "respectable universities" don't offer distance learning. It's not some elitist thing, there just isn't any reason to do so, not when there are already 5-10 students applying for every one they admit, so why waste the effort to create a distance learning program. This is esp. true for engineering which has such strict accreditation requirements.

      I empathize with your situation. Without the BSE, your job advancement is limited, but you can't afford to quit either. At least you're trying to improve your lot, for that I applaud your initiative. Having talked to many students in your situation, your only choices are:

      1) Forget "respectful" - a decent state school with a fair to good program may be what you need, as you'll get a decent education, have more class flexibility (as they deal with folks in your situation versus fancy nice schools where all students are fulltime) - all for less $$$. The BSE is not like some PhD, it's just a mark of your qualification. It's more about the job placement that they offer than how highly ranked the school is.
      2) Look for an alternative job that offers you the flexibility to complete your degree. A good employer would support your plans to complete the degree, as that makes you a better and more productive employee long term. If they aren't supportive, that's a dead end job anyway as they aren't ever going to go to bat for you wrt raises/promotions.
      3) Bite the bullet, save like mad, get a loan, take 2 yrs off and get the degree. It'll pay off long term, as long as you are careful and have a good exit strategy, such that you graduate right into a much better job. This means picking a school with good industry contacts, being proactive in seeking internships, and yes, shameless self-promotion. You may qualify for educational loans or even outright grants too. Not easy to get at the BSE level, but it's worth asking.
      4) Do nothing, which means being stuck where you are with at best inflationary raises, limited job security, and even less job satisfaction - esp. since you sound like the intelligent, ambitious kind who aren't happy just showing up and punching in/out.

      Generally no you cannot get ANY engineering degree online.

      Engineering degrees require you to take Calculus based Chemistry and Physics with labs.

      You cannot take labs online.

    I am well into my career. I don't want to leave to go back to school, but I know I would have more opportunities with an engineering degree. Should I study online? I'm worried the quality of education will be much less, or that I won't be recognized as well with an online degree.

      For engineering, online courses are inadequate at best. Even Engineering Technology classes can not be appreciated sitting in front of a computer. Engineering is very hands on.

      You can get a piece of paper that says engineering but I would not recommend it.

      University of North Dakota offers ABET-accredited "distance" degrees in Engineering. Students must to visit the school from time to time.
      I'm an engineer. I don't think distance learning is a viable way to get an Engineering education at the undergraduate level. Maybe it's OK at the Master's level.

      EE is one of the few degrees that really rely on labs. You need to learn how to built and analyze circuits and there is only one way in doing that is by going to lab. Im about to graduate with a B.S in EE so I am talking from experience.

      Stanford offers MS in several engineering disciplines online. And I don't know of anyone who thinks that Stanford is a bad school to attend.

      The leading colleges for optices are the Univ. of Rochester, and Arizona State. You can also get into OE by getting a degree in Physics with an emphasis on optics from a lot of good colleges.

      Online engineering degrees are very rare in my experience due to the practical component involved. I only know of one - and that is in electrical engineering.

      Online classes these days are a lot like attending classes. They post the lectures online and you do most things exactly the same. However those like engineering and nursing that have a practical component are obviously problematical.

      If you do, ask what accrediting body accredits their program. Then, check with the accrediting organization to find out whether they're legit.

      It is totally legal to offer a program that is not accredited. However, if you graduate, no employer will accept an unaccredited engineering degree, and you will not be able to apply for the state engineering license.

      Not yet, but Stony Brook University (SUNY) is working on getting their online bachelor of electrical engineering degree program approved by the State of NY Ed. Dept., after which they expect to also get ABET accreditation. They've been working on it for a while, and it sounds like approval is expected by mid-2010 - perhaps sooner. Classes can be taken even now on a non-matriculating basis, and they are significantly cheaper than UND. I've taken several classes, and they have been very good (and very challenging). Good luck.

      University of Hartford has a good Audio Engineering Technology degree, but it is not online.

      There are tons of online programs. I personally attended traditional and online-only schools, and I have taught for various online schools and traditional schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Schools tend to vary in price, so we could say online schools are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

      The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

      You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

      There are very few online engineering undergrad degrees available that are reputable and accredited. One is North Dakota State. The other is a school in Virginia - could be Virginia Commonwealth, but I forget, forgive me. I'm sorry, you'd have to dig for that one, but there *is* one in VA.

      One of those schools only lets in people from that state. The other is more flexible.

      But the reality is, engineering is not a major offered online, because so much of the work is hands-on. It's not even all that commonly offered part time in person.

      There are a lot of online masters engineering programs; but not undergrad.

      You won't find an accredited university offering such thing, at least for a bachelors degree. I know many universities offer online masters degrees in engineering. However, I don't think that's your case.

      You need to spend so many hours doing lab work to get an engineering B.S., which you can't do online.

      You could try some of the for-profit institutes (Devry, ITT, etc) but you would get an 'Engineering Technology' degree, which is basically a technician degree, but with the word engineering in front.
