Associates Degree Accounting Online

An Associate Degree is a type of academic degree that is awarded by a bachelor's degree-granting institution, junior colleges and community colleges as well. Typically, an associate degree is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor's degree program. Associates degrees are awarded in the United States and, more rarely, Canada, though this type of degree is also being added to the academic degree systems of other countries.

Australia added associate degrees to their Australian Qualifications Framework in 2004, though very few academic programs have begun to use the title. In the United Kingdom, foundation degrees are the equivalent to associate's degrees. As an equivalent to higher diplomas, Hong Kong initiated various associate's degree programs.

There are four general categories of associate's degrees, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Business Administration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I am looking for a community college that offers associates degrees in accounting entirely online.
    Those aren't community colleges.

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best online college for receiving an Associates degree in Accounting?
Please, no scams and experience is greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
Its cheaper if you just take online courses from your local community college if you want an Associates in Accounting. A lot of school online are for profit schools, thats why I dont reccomend them.

  3. QUESTION:
    Accounting degree online question?
I am currently trying to determine if I want to go to school for accounting or not. The community college I live in offers an associates degree in accounting. Alot of the classes are offered online, which would work well with my work schedule. Does the value of the degree lessen (in the eyes of an employer) if I earned most of my credits online instead of in classroom? Is accounting an easy subject to study all online or is in classroom best? I have taken online classes before and have done well. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
You should definitely consider attending an online college to earn your accounting degree. Although some might say an online degree will be easier to earn, or will not be respected by employers, that is simply not the case.

Your degree AND transcript will be IDENTICAL to the degree conferred upon traditional brick-and-mortar students. Your employers will never even know you took your classes online.

I would advise against attending any college that is synonymous with online learning (we all know which colleges I'm talking about). Attend a well-established university. State schools often have the best tuition rates and people don't immediately think of online learning when you say you earned your degree at the University of Illinois or UMass.

If you already have experience with online classes, accounting should not pose a problem. As you know, an accounting degree has a wide-range of requirements beyond accounting such as business, management, and so on. I earned by Business degree online and had no problems completing all of my accounting and finance requirements through online study.

      1. Champlain College

      6. Virginia College
      7. University of Northwestern Ohio

  4. QUESTION:
How can I get my associates degree online for fairly good cost? And can I pay as I go?
I made an Academy online account and stuff and it's saying total fees are 40 grand how is that possible does it really cost that much

    • ANSWER:
Excelsior College, Charter Oak College, and Thomas Edision State College are online colleges that are public and accredited. They cost wayy less too. Check them out.

  5. QUESTION:
What employment opportunities are there for someone with an Associates degree in accounting?
I currently finished my 2 yr associate of arts in accounting degree through the University of Phoenix online. What sort of opportunities are there for someone with this degree? Also, I am debating on whether or not to continue my education to get my bachelors degree and/ or CPA certified. Any comments will be gratefully accepted.

    • ANSWER:
Lol I really hope this is a joke. I'm sorry but a "degree" from the University of Phoenix isn't worth the paper it's printed on. You really should have done your homework before going to a place like that, even though they say it's accredited it is NOT taken seriously by any employer. They know it is a for-profit diploma mill that will take anyone who is gullible enough to pay the money. If you try to apply for a job with that name on your resume you will be laughed at. I'm sorry you wasted so much time and money but you should have done a little research before buying into their scam. Your credits will likely not transfer to any legitimate school so you'll have to start all over again if you want to earn an actual Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree. Also, accounting is a field where you need at least a Bachelor's so this time try looking into state colleges, NOT something online, as those degrees are worthless and not respected by anyone.

  6. QUESTION:
    BBA in accounting degree online?????
I was thinking of getting my BBA in accounting degree online after getting my AAS degree in accounting at a community college. I will finish my associates degree by december 2011. I plan to work as an accountant, then assistant finance controller to a Profeesional Financial Controller with my Bachelor's degree, But which college online offers this degree and is cheap??? Is it hard to get a degree online? Is it much different than actually attending a university? how hard is it? is getting a bachelor's degree in accounting online a good idea? Would it be too hard? all advice will be helpful

    thanks

    • ANSWER:
I am currently obtaining my associates degree in accounting and attending Colorado Technical University online. Before you chose any online college, make sure the college is accredited. This website has online colleges that are accredited and offers a bachelors degree in accounting http://www.getdegrees.com/p/accounting-schools. Online schools are more expensive than community colleges and universities. The benefit of an online college is you graduate sooner. It is taking me 16 months to graduate with my associate’s degree. I don’t know if a bachelors degree is the same amount of time. If you have a busy life than it would be hard because an online college is very time consuming. It is very easy to fall behind on the assignments. You will want to have a computer and a printer. It would help to have a back computer, like the library or a friend’s computer. You will be printing all your assignment and other papers. I love going to school online because I can do my homework whenever I want and I don’t have to leave the house.

This is where I need HELP! I am looking for a college that offers an accounting degree program preferable an associates degree and a bachelors as well once the associates is obtained. It MUST be very flexible so that I can work on my courses while the kids are napping or playing or in bed for the night. To be able to sign on every day and make it for a set class time would be almost impossible. I also need the college to offer financial aid, or at least accept student loans through AES. Online College Suggestions that meet this criteria would be wonderful so that I could do further research into. Thank you So much for your time and help!

  8. QUESTION:
Is an accounting degree online worth it?
I am looking into starting a degree program online in accounting. I am at home with my kids right now and when they both enter school I want to go back to work. I have found several different degrees online and wondered what the difference is in these degrees. There is a bs in accounting, an accounting assistant and an accounting specialist degree. I know a BS is a four year program but what about the other two??? What is the best option for someone who wants to get into the field and eventually become a certified accountant. Should a get an associates degree first and then get a job in the field???? I would appreciate any advice.

    • ANSWER:
I am doing an online degree now with University of Phoenix. I say get your assoicates first and then go for your bachelors after you find work you get do it at night. I love doing it online. It helps with your schedules.

  9. QUESTION:
I'm going to get my associates of accounting online but Im not sure which college to go to...?
I talked with University of Phoenix and it will be 19,500 to get my associates online. I was thinking that well I'm completely eligible for grants becuase I am considered an independent and I have a child.
BUT now I was researching a little more and had NO idea that I could go to Chandler Gilbert Community College online.. at dollars per credit versus 5 dollars per credit.

Would it be easier to get grants and scholarships for Chandler-Gilbert?
Should I go there versus UOP?

Also, another question. For this accounting degree do I have to do my prerequistes and stuff?

    • ANSWER:
Definitely go to the community college. I'm not familiar with that particular school, but there is no reason to pay ,500 for a for-profit associate's degree when you could get at least as good a program at almost any community college, and you would have a much easier time transferring to a four-year college, should you eventually decide to go in that direction, from the community college.

And yes, it would be easier to get scholarships and grants at the community college. Since the for-profits like UOP are in it for the money, they aren't too interested in giving you a financial break.

This is what you would be taking at Chandler-Gilbert College:

This is what you would be taking at the University of Phoenix:

  10. QUESTION:
Will an employer hesitate to hire me as an accountant if I get my accounting degree online?
I have my associates in business from a community college (not online) but want to do my last 2 yrs for my bachelors online. Do employers in the business field see this as a weakness or strength?

    • ANSWER:
Not really. In fact, many business professionals do their graduate studies online or through other "distance learning" methods. Just make sure that your online school is accredited by the REGIONAL, not national, accreditation organization. To find which regional organization may apply to your school, visit:

      http://www.chea.org/Directories/regional.asp

  11. QUESTION:
    accelerated associates online degree?
Having trouble finding one, it needs to be online, needs to be accelerated, and has to offer a degree in accounting or history.

    • ANSWER:
Nearly every community college offers an online degree in accounting. Even if they do not list the degree as accelerated, you can often complete by taking summer, fall, winter, spring, and summer semesters (15 months). You can then get a job in the fall.

You didn't say why you wanted the degree. If it is for transfer, then you should be in an AS Business Administration degree. Accounting associates degrees are usually designed for career and not for transfer.

  12. QUESTION:
Accounting degree a possibility for me? Which Online degree?
I need to get my Associates degree online because right now my son with his health I need to stay home until he gets a bit older (like a year to 6 months older). I'd prefer something in the medical field like getting my Assoc. degree in science in allied health science so I could later become a nurse or dental hygienist. It's just that I know if I go the medical route there will be more schooling and it just bothers me knowing that I could have gotten both of those occupations in just one shot with an assoc. the first time and a bachelors degree is helpful but not necessary for those professions. My husband thinks being an accountant would be much more lucrative, which I agree. I'm just extremely intimidated by the course work since I'm just okay to bad at math. I know I can do it but there will be tons of nights crying because I can't figure out the math problem or I don't understand the concept of macroeconomics.
Waiting isn't really much of an option, otherwise I would just wait it out for a year.
    Thanks for help in advance.

    • ANSWER:
      Vero,

It’s you who is going to enroll in the program and not your husband. If you struggle at math then I would advise you to steer clear of Accounting. An accounting degree entails complex math and may not be something you would want to consider. There are a number of choices when it comes to healthcare majors and degrees. It is true that some of the healthcare majors would require you to go to school at times but that can be manageable. If you want to know your options and learn more about online healthcare degrees and programs then you can peruse the healthcare programs offered by Independence University. The university offers a wide range of healthcare programs including nursing, allied health, respiratory therapy and more.

  13. QUESTION:
Are there any online public schools in Texas where I can get an associate or bachelors degree in accounting?
I am a Texas resident and want to find a an online accounting program where I can pay in-state tuition.

    • ANSWER:
Texas was nice enough to put the lists of many of their online programs on one web page for us so they'd be easy to find.

      http://www.telecampus.utsystem.edu/catalog/programs.aspx

Peterson's gives us a good list of accounting bachelor's online but none are in Texas.
      http://www.petersons.com/distancelearning/code/nameresults.asp?sponsor=1&FromPage=DetailSearch

Remember though, many online programs don't charge out of state tuition. Georgia, for example, has an 'ERate' for tuition that allows out of state students to take online courses at the in-state rate.

Texas is also a member of the Southern Regional Education Board (Academic Common Market) which allows students to pay in-state at member colleges for many programs.

  14. QUESTION:
Online college, business degrees, and accounting...oh my!?
So here's the deal- i will be graduating high school in may and have to figure out this college stuff, that i have only begun to think about! I would like to get into bookkeeping, banking, accounting etc. and would like to attend my local community college-HACC in Lebanon PA. They have associate degrees in accounting and some kind of certificate in accounting which is about half of the credits for the associate degree, and they have an online associate degree in business admin. I would rather do the online degree but is that degree enough to get into accounting and bookkeeping or does it have to be accounting? What is online college like? Can I expect to pay the same for online coursework as on campus tuition? How versatile is a business admin degree? Yeah this is a lot but any kind of advice to help an overwhelmed student would be helpful :)

    • ANSWER:
A business administration degree is versatile, but sometimes employers are not looking for someone with a versatile education. Rather, some employers look for someone with an education tailored to the position they're looking to fill. If you are pretty set on a) accounting and b) taking classes online, then I would recommend finding a school that offers the online accounting program you want.

The advantage of an online school is you don't have to find one in your local area, so I wouldn't just limit yourself to the local community college.

As far as costs and other specifics go, no two online colleges are exactly the same. They vary in several areas (cost, quality of education, time commitment, program offerings, classmate interaction, etc.).

I have heard of some online colleges offering a free course for prospective students to take so they can decide if the school is right for them. I would either check one of those schools out, or decide exactly what you're looking for and do plenty of research to make sure the school you choose has the criteria you're looking for.

Bryan College Online offers an online associate of applied science degree in business, with an accounting emphasis, and they also offer a free online class too. Maybe you could check them out.

      Good luck!

  15. QUESTION:
What's a good online school to get an AA in Accounting, where you can make payments?
I'd like to enroll in an online school for an Associates degree in accounting. I don't want to take out a loan from a bank to pay for it, and didn't qualify for financial aid when I considered a local campus. So, which online schools give the option of making payment to them, and aren't a diploma mill?

    • ANSWER:
You're well informed to know to avoid diploma mills. The best way to avoid diploma mills is to avoid proprietary (for-profit) colleges. You need to find a non-profit public or private college. They will tell you on the phone if they are non-profit. If they don't want to discuss the question on the phone, have nothing to do with them as they want you to make a visit so they can give you a high pressure sales pitch.

Your best bet is a public community college, either classroom or online. Their fees will be less expensive than most on-line colleges and many of them offer evening classroom classes so that you can work during the day.

      Good luck.

  16. QUESTION:
How do I get my Associates Degree in Accounting?
I found a University that I'm interested in, but will possibly see if I find another that offers Online Degrees (I have 2 small children and got laid off unfortunately). I'm trying to take this as an opportunity to start on a degree. I've decided that Accounting is the way to go. In my previous jobs I've always worked with the Accounting Dept & also HR. I'm not sure of how to start or where to start looking. Do I begin by looking for Grants/financial aid? Or do I begin with searching for a school that offers Online courses? Once I find the school, how will I know what classes I need to take? Are Online Degrees recognized by all businesses, as well as other Colleges (if I ever want to continue and get my Bachelors after a few years will the credits be transferable)? I know the short term goal is to start on my degree but after that I'm at a loss. Please advise and thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
for an associates degree in accounting it is better to go to a community college. Cheaper, easier to get in, faster.

  17. QUESTION:
About how much money can I make with an associates degree in accounting, and what types of jobs can I get?
I am going to graduate in a few months with my associates in accounting from an accredited online school. I'm in Michigan (if I can find a job) I'm wondering how much money I can make
Thanks, I'm making 300 a month right now so in comparison 25k is a ton of money!
uh yeah any retard off the street can be a cashier. I want to use my degree not my diploma.
I've been in school long enough to be a doctor lol. So I'm might as well keep going until I get my masters or doctorate. I'm just hoping I won't stay dirt poor depending on my boyfriend to support me for a few more years.

    • ANSWER:
Not a whole lot at first. 25-30K. You may be able to get a book keeping job at a small business.

  18. QUESTION:
what type of jobs are associated with an accounting degree?
I am just wondering what types of job are associated with accounting because I am doing research on it so I can be sure this is what I want to do. I actually am taking an online accounting course right now and was just curious so I can figure out what I want to do with this degree.

    • ANSWER:
depending on your degree, but here are some options:
      - accounting / bookkeeping clerk
      - accounting manager (financial accounting, cost accounting, tax accounting)
      - controller
      - CFO

Entities hiring - all, including for profit companies, non-for-profits, governmental entities. Examples may be banks, manufacturing companies, IRS, public accounting companies... even FBI, as was noted above.

if you have a cpa, then it's a pretty big plus to you

  19. QUESTION:
How do employers perceive online learning and degrees?
I currently am 3 credits away from obtaining my associates degree in accounting from an accredited online degree program. I have always been curious as to how employers perceive these programs in terms of quality of education and readiness for the job. I am trying to decide whether to continue on with the online program for my bachelors or to get into a local traditional learning program.

Please offer any thoughts or experiences on the subject. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
It depends. The public school system for example could care less if you have a masters from Harvard or a masters from an online university, they still have they same payscale as long you simply have it (pretty ridiculous). Other employers put more emphasis on traditional colleges than others. In an indirect (and maybe somewhat unfair) way, it may be generally viewed that a traditional college setting requires more work and commitment, and therefore is valued more. It doesn't mean there aren't plenty of very smart people with only online educations but when you walk in for an interview, generally you are being sized up in a very short period of time, and human bias is always a factor. You never know how that person is going to perceive you but as long as you stand out well and are educated and well-spoken in your interview, you should be mostly okay...I personally enjoy having the credibility of a major public university on my resume though.

  20. QUESTION:
Employment for an Accounting BA degree online?
I'm going to a community college and will graduate with my associates after the fall 09. I want to transfer to an online college if possible and I'm looking at Western Governors University(wgu.edu). I was wondering if anyone has gotten a degree in accounting (or other business area) online and how their employers looked apon the degree. Was there any trouble getting a job with the degree? Or trasfering to another college for a masters (online or traditional)? I just want to find out if there is any added trouble with getting a job and pursuing a higher education from having gotten a degree from an online degree. I would be especially interested in anyone's experience who has received a degree from WGU.

    • ANSWER:
Well it depends what kind of accounting career you're interested in. I'm not familiar with the school mentioned, but if you have hopes of working for any prominent accounting firm you really need to make sure internship and job placement opportunities are made available to you at an AACSB accredited business college. More often than not, entirely online programs do not have this service available so you're being shortchanged. Big firms do their new inexperienced hires exclusively with the schools they have strong relationships with and rarely hire the inexperienced on the outside.

On the other hand, if you're content with just working in the back office of a retail store, small bank, that sort of thing, then it likely doesn't matter where you get the degree since you can apply for these jobs directly on the outside.

  21. QUESTION:
Is it cheaper to get an associate degree Online or in a community college?
I am signing up for Everest University, majoring in Business Accounting. I have a full loan grant from financial aid, but still pretty expensive. I was wondering if community college is cheaper in achieving the same Major. I need someone who knows...please help.

    • ANSWER:
it prob would be cheapest to get the associates degree online at a local community college (you'd spend a heck of alot less money in gasoline and almost all their courses are offered online).

  22. QUESTION:
Do you need an associates degree to be accepted to an online college?
If no then what colleges would you recommend? Im am looking into business administration or accounting.

    • ANSWER:
There are tons of online programs. I personally attended American Intercontinental Univ. and Capella University, and I have taught for various online schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Online courses tend to vary in price, so we could say they are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

  23. QUESTION:
Which would be better an associate degree or a bachelors degree from an online college?
I hate my state college. Which would be better getting a 2 year accounting degree from my local community college or a bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State College. Thomas Edison State College is a legitimate state college, it was started in 1979. They have a business administration degree with an accounting concentration.

    Which would be better?

    • ANSWER:
Thomas Edison State College is a ligitimate New Jersey college regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1977. Reports say their online program is a "best buy". The degree probably does not state how much work was done online vs at the college. Therefore, a Bac.. Degree is better than Ass.. Degree and likely T.E.S.C. has better respect than the community. It is probably 4 yr vs 2 much more intensive program.

  24. QUESTION:
Should I complete my associates degree in accounting before I complete my bachelor's?
I have to pay for college out of pocket since I don't qualify for financial aide. (I already have a bachelor's degree and am working towards my second bachelor's.) I have about 15 classes left to complete my bachelor's, but all the classes would be online so that's really hard. A

Anyway, if I complete my associates degree first, I will have to take 5 classes where 2 of them will not transfer or count toward my 15 classes left.

Should I just go straight for the bachelor's instead since those 2 classes will be a waste? I was thinking that going for my associates will be good since I will be taking the really hard classes with a professor whereas if I take it online I will have to learn it all on my own.
No, I am going to an accredited online College called Thomas Edison State College in NJ. It's legit. The classes will transfer but it will not satisfy my graduation requirements.

    • ANSWER:
It makes no sense that you'd go after an Associate's degree, since they are predominated by "general education courses," when you already have a one Bachelors degreee - when in fact all it would take to get a Bachelors (or even a Masters) in Accounting would be 2 more years at a university.

Are you taking them at one of those FAKE/PRETEND online colleges?
That would likely be your "transfer credit" issue.

  25. QUESTION:
    Universities - Online Accounting?
I am looking to do an associate degree in accounting or accounting management online. I checked out a few schools such as Penn Foster, Devry and the Universoty of Phoenix. But I heard that these are more expensive and not as recognised as state schools. Can anyone tell me what are good universities and could anyone tell me if the above schools are good or I should go to state schools alone?

    • ANSWER:
What type of program and school you attend has a lot to do with you lifestyle and needs. I attended the University of Phoenix and they have a good program for working adults. If you're short on time and want to get your degree quickly a school like University of Phoenix or Devry is perfect. They are geared toward adults that have busy schedules, kids, etc. and don't have a lot of time for school. The undergrad classes are five weeks each and they focus more on practical application of the information they teach such as presentations and papers instead of tests.

The downside is that they are more expensive. In terms of whether they are recognized, I think it depends on who you speak to. I went to a very well known traditional school for my undergrad and University of Phoenix for grad school and I don't think people that hired me really cared either way. They just wanted to know if I had a degree and whether I could do the job and in my opinion, a lot of whether you get hired depends on whether the person who's doing the hiring likes you, not what school you went to.

If you are more concerned about cost and don't care how long it takes you, you can do the same thing at a state school. The class times are not as flexible and you probably won't be able to take all of the classes online like you would at Devry or University of Phoenix. But it will be A LOT cheaper. You just have to decide what is more important to you. Good luck!

  26. QUESTION:
I am planning to study accounting online in a two year community college in Atlanta area.?
How is the job market now for an accounting diploma holder. Would it be better if I go for an associate degree? What is the difference between these two? Which community college in atlanta is good in accounting? Is online studying a good idea? I simply hate travel 30 miles in order to get to school.

    • ANSWER:
People with accounting skills will always be needed as long as there are companies needing your skills. I believe you would fare better if you went for the degree rather than the certificate. The certificate usually indicates that you have the skills for accounting but doesn't necessarily carry the backing that an Associates degree does. Employers are more likely to hire someone who received their degree from a community college rather than an online program. And accounting is one of those things that is best learned by attending a live class, because you can ask questions and receive responses faster. I don't doubt the online program is a quality program but online programs carry a stigma and employers don't like them much.

  27. QUESTION:
Are online degrees the same as on campus degrees?
I don't have a car and school is very far. I was thinking on earning an associates online.
    Is it worth it?

Will it be difficult finding a job with an online degree?
    Paralegal
    accounting

    • ANSWER:
There are tons of traditional schools, colleges, and universities offering full programs online. Check out your state colleges to see what they have. This site has a listing of schools offering online degrees by state. http://www.distancelearningalliance.com

Having been in this industry for over 10 years as an instructor and before as a student, I have seen this method of facilitation of course grow significantly through the years taking advantage of the newest technology in most cases.

The key is to make sure the college/university is accredited. I have three basic recommendations for everyone looking into online/distance education. They all have to do with exploring; after all, you have to defend your assets.

      1. Make certain that you have triple checked their accreditation. First, they tell you what it is, then you go to that accrediting body’s website (not through the link provided by the school), and thirdly you would visit the department of education to see what they have to say. Do your diligent research into the institutions once you have narrowed down to a couple. You can look at the Better Business Bureau for more information on the college.

      2. You must have extreme self motivation and be able to teach yourself per say. This means that you will not have someone telling you verbally, so it is up to you to get the information from the course room, text, and other resources. The best way to look at it is like a guided independent study course.

      3. Review your goals, personal and professional. Make sure that the school that you are going to offers the programs that match your goals. Do not settle. There are many programs that are similar, but you have to make the ultimate decision. Do not let it be based on finances and length of program, but the fact that when you are finished or near finished you will be able to assume your proper place in the career field sought.

There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

  28. QUESTION:
    Affordable Online Degree?
I want to enroll in an online degree program ... I'm looking for an Associate Degree in Accounting ... I need a program in which each of the classes are 0.00 or less ... does such a thing exist ? ...

    • ANSWER:
Because many longstanding, regionally accredited, and completely reputable state universities now offer courses and even degrees online, you can now pursue almost any area of study through distance education.

The links below are the absolute best you will find. They contain more links to many well-respected state university distance education programs.

What distinguishes these sorts of programs is that the courses are generally transferable between regionally accredited institutions.

I would advise you to start by looking at the state university system in the state in which you live, and check to see if they offer the programs and courses in which you are interested. If not, check some other state universities. (Pennsylvania has a great system, for instance.)

Avoid the "online universities" (for-profit businesses, like U Phoenix, Capella, AIU, etc.) at all costs. These businesses do not deliver on their promises.

Note: In institutions of higher education, regional accreditation is better than national accreditation. This sounds odd, but I assure you that it is the case.

  29. QUESTION:
I have a Bachelor's degree in General Business. Should I consider a associate's degree in Accounting?
I graduated about a year ago and still have not found a job in my field. I am thinking of going back to school (online probably) and getting an associate's degree in Accounting or Finance. Do you think that would be a good move? I thought since I have a degree in Business and then getting an associate's in Accounting, may help with my career search.

    • ANSWER:
If you can go back to your college you could look into a minor in accounting. It shouldn't take very long since you already have your accounting and economics started.

I don't think it would seriously help with a career search, though.

I can't imagine what classes you would take for an Associates in Accounting that you haven't already taken for your degree except for Intermediate accounting courses. And if you take those you can get your minor. I think a minor would look better than an associates degree.

  30. QUESTION:
I need a associates degree in marketing or accounting? ?
But everything is so expensive! I want to do it online.
I don't really care what school it is as long as its inexpensive!

    Help?
    What are my options?

  31. QUESTION:
What is the best associate's degree to get online?
I am a mother of two and have a full time daycare. I am wanting to use nap time and evening to pursue an online degree, but I have no clue what I should go for. I hate math so accounting is out. I want to make sure I can get a good paying job when I am done.
Okay I've decided I want an online associate's degree in software engineering. Which is the best regionally accredited online school to achieve this?

    • ANSWER:
Just make sure very sure what ever you choose is regionally accredited a national accreditation will not 1. transfer in most cases to another school 2. not generally recognized by privet sector employers 3. usually much more expensive than brick and mortar schools.

  32. QUESTION:
Bachelors in Psychology, want to get an accounting degree?
I am going to take some online entry level courses in accounting at the community college next semester. I am currently working full time but I am in a field that is not suited to my personality and skills and I don't know what I can really do with a bachelors in pshychology.

If I can get an associates in Accounting, how useful would that be? I know in some states I could possibly get a CPA with a few accounting courses (although I realize it's difficult to get).

    • ANSWER:
A CPA after a few accounting courses is probably not likely. The CPA exam is very difficult, and I believe many wiat until after a Bachelor's in accounting although I may be wrong. I understand what you are going through though. I started out in human services, and my Bachelor's is in Administration and my masters in business. However, I know what my goal in the long run is. Maybe you should start by sitting down and deciding what you do want to do or would be willing to do based on your personality and characteristics. After that jot down your interests too. Then wherever you had planned on taking the accounting courses talk to an academic advisor or counselor at the school. Make an appointment and its usually free.

  33. QUESTION:
Need advise on obtaining bachelors in accounting thru online courses.?
I obtained an associates degree from a business school 25 years ago. I've been working 25 years as an accountant and am successful and make good money. I'm at a standstill though because I never received a bachelors in accounting. I'd like to obtain credits toward a bachelors by taking online courses. Will my credits from years ago be transferable? What about my job experience...will that get me some credits? How do I go about getting a degree from a college that will give me a "real" bachelors degree? I would only be interested in online courses due to my busy work schedule. Are these online degrees legit? Any info would be helpful!

    • ANSWER:
Some schools are, the best thing to do is contact a local school. There's one in my area and you can get your bachelors degree in accounting from them. This school is sort of connected if you want to call it that, where if I chose to go there they would accept the credits and courses from the school I received my Associates from. I would thing that it would not matter how long ago you received the credits, but some places do not accept credits from just anywhere. Job experience only gaines you points in job hunting not school credit.
Your local schools are the best places to get your education from because these national school advertised on TV are way more expensive.

  35. QUESTION:
I will have bachelors in accounting degree by this summer 09. I want to be RN.Can i get credit transferred?
Is there anyone who can provide information on this. I browsed online, didn't get any information. I would like to know if i can get credit for 2 yrs of associate degree.

    • ANSWER:
Look for programs called "accelerated BSN" or "post baccalaureate BSN", which are created just for people like you who hold a previous baccalaureate degree in some other field. You might need a few science courses with labs for pre-reqs, but once in the nursing core it would take you about 2 years to complete.

  36. QUESTION:
Getting my degree in accounting but a little lost?
I started at the University of phoenix not to long ago to get my associates degree in accounting. I always wanted to do something in the medical field with babies/pregnancy. I went through a few phases such as a neonatologist, an OBGYN and an ultrasound tech. However when I looked into school they were really like pick what you want, and they did not offer anything in the medical field so I seen accounting and I know they make really good money. However the further I get into school (about 13 weeks now) the more I am realizing I really don't want to be an accountant. But I need to do something online because I have a daughter who is 15 months, and baby on the way. I just don't know what to do because I do not want to waste 2 years with something I don't want to do, but I don't want to quite and than not do anything. Plus I had to apply for student loans, so no matter what I think I have to pay the loans back because they have already been applied to my school. I just don't know what to do? Is there any medical program that I do not need to do at a campus besides like medical billing cause its not much different than accounting.
plus before I decided on accounting I looked up information on it, and everythign I read made it sound like right out of school with no work experience only your associates degree that starting pay was like 30 an hour, even the advisors at the school made it seem like that, but now when I look on like craigslist for accounting jobs, they all say they want a BA with atleast a year of work experience and the pay is only like 15?

    • ANSWER:
First of all, you need to leave University of Phoenix. Avoid the for-profit degree mill schools; they are horribly over priced and they are *not* respected by employers. Look at traditional college/community colleges websites and see what they offer for online education. Getting your online degree from a proper school is a decision you will not regret. And, it's cheaper.

Second, an Associates in Accounting isn't good for very much. In order to make any good money as an accountant, you need to be certified. There are different types of certification, but generally you can expect that all will require a Bachelors degree + some work experience. Here are the types of Accountant certification in the USA: http://www.newaccountantusa.com/newsFeat/ip/ip_acctcerts.html

Without a certification, you'll be stuck with crappy jobs like basic bookkeeping.

So if an Associates degree is all you are able to do, then I recommend something else. Healthcare is growing now (hence the recent surge in Nursing students, and other healthcare jobs) because the Baby Boomers are getting old, so being an ultrasound tech or any other 2-year healthcare-related program will probably work well for you in the future.

  37. QUESTION:
Is Everest a good online College to attend to?
I'm thinking on getting my Accounting Associate Degree at Everest. For certain personal reasons I have to do it online. I was wondering if Everest is a good college overall? Would jobs take me serious with a Associate Degree from Everest?
    Please Help!

    • ANSWER:
Please do NOT sign up with Everest which is one of those online, For-profit schools (though may have "brick and mortar" buildings and may be "accredited"). Other online, for-profit schools to steer clear of include penn foster, ashworth, devry, ITT tech, capella, regis, high tech, university of phoenix, strayer, remington, brown mackie, westwood, keiser, ashford, walden, aiu, colorado tech, grand canyon, ashwood, kaplan, sanford brown, anthem, pima institute and others as they are merely out to "make a profit" (** and course credits may NOT transfer to other schools).

These consumer sites have negative posts by former students about those online, for-profit schools including Everest, and please heed the students' warnings:

      - http://www.complaintsboard.com and can search.

Just about all traditional colleges including community colleges and state universities have some online classes these days.

      For U.S. colleges: http://www.utexas.edu/world/univ

General career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks' or such.

  38. QUESTION:
Will you be able to find an accountant job after complete an AS degree from Ashworth College?
I've heard that some employers won't accept the online college and that you can't transfer credits to other colleges from Ashworth...does anyone know anything about the accounting program? And is it hard to find a job with an associate degree in accounting?

    • ANSWER:
probably not,, most people with bachelor degrees in accounting can't find a job unless they are in a major city with firms large enough to have training programs for new grads,,, and you need to have a 3.0 gpa or better to get that.

Look in the newspaper,, most accounting jobs are for the experienced. For a 2 year degree, you better pick healthcare or truck driving.

I have already received my associates degree and I have already finished all of my prerequisites for an accounting degree. I was going to a state college, but I am now pregnant and will not be able to go to school for several reasons. My husband is in the military, and that is alot of moving around, and of course I will have our son to take care of :-) . I am not currently in the position to be able to go to school, but I can easily take online classes, which I have done before. I am having trouble finding an online accounting degree that is accepted by any state cpa boards and the AICPA. Can anyone point me in the right direction? 40. QUESTION:
Help choose online College for Accounting?
I have been looking around for moths now for a well accredited and legitimate online school. I have found some but how ever some have restrictions.. Help me choose a school that will fit the following criteria..
    * Associates in Accounting
    * I am looking to complete the degree 100% from home online. But how ever I like the schools that have a campus as well, just seems more legit.
    * It would have to be a undergrad degree..
    * I have been taking a few general Ed calsses at my community college. ( Math, English and a Computer course for a total of 9 credits.)
There are so many college out there.. that offer online now I am not sure where to start, although aware of the scams and the non accreditable schools out there. Please narrow it down for me.
Also.. What are your comments on a associates in accounting? thanks
    *

    • ANSWER:
Everyone and his brother is teaching online these days. Your choices are many and may include your local community college.

There are a lot of options for you. Just have to look in the right place. I like the search tool at Petersons for finding such things.
http://www.petersons.com/distancelearning/code/nameresults.asp?sponsor=1&FromPage=DetailSearch returns three pages of options including a large group of public community colleges such as Ann Arrundel in Maryland. Montgomery CCC in Pa., Northern Va. CC in Va., Randolph CC in NC, Seminole CC in Fla., etc... and a few 4-years.

I'd suggest you not pick one of the for-profits (Colo Tech, Phoenix, Axia, AIU, etc...). My reasoning is simply that they cost too much. A public community college is the way to go for this degree. Your own state community college may be the best route but some states now allow all online students to pay in-state tuition. New Mexico is an example. And their in-state may be lower than your state.

An AS in Accounting doesn't prepare a professional accountant. It prepares bookkeepers, accounting clerks, tax preparers, accounting assistants, and such. If you will later want a bachelor's degree then make sure your associates degree is not an Associate of Applied Science. The AAS doesn't transfer well. An AS is the way to go on this one.

Also make certain that the school you pick is regionally accredited. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_accreditation At the associates level, not much else matters. If it's not regionally accredited then it won't likely transfer later.

If you keep the option of furthering your education open by only attending reputable schools and performing well; an AS in Accounting is a pretty good degree to have. Every business in the US has to count the money and every worker in the US has to pay taxes. There will be no end to the profession of accounting.

If you want to be the most employable when you finish, make sure you learn about computerized accounting (Peachtree, Quickbooks, etc...), Medical Insurance Coding and Billing (may require a few extra classes but is worth it since it opens the door to a lot of jobs), and Income Tax (because you can always do people's taxes in the season for a bunch of extra cash).

Since you're an accounting/math sort of person - take a class or two in Microsoft Excel and then the MCAS exam for Excel. Good Excel solution providers are hard to find. Excel will do some really advanced stuff if you know how and businesses need people to know how.

Add: Yes Gregg, we know each other from other forums. Welcome to YA! You'll be a real asset.

  41. QUESTION:
What are my chances of a company hiring me with no degree?
I am taking accounting course from an accredited school (PCDI) to be exact. After I finish my course which I estimate to be in 9 months with a diploma saying I passed will I be hired by a company. Will they take my certificate serious or will they want me to have a degree and more schooling? I know to be a CPA you have to be certified but in the accounting field must I be certified for other positions. I plan to take more schooling online and earn an associates degree will that help me out too in being promoted? Are online courses really legit in helping people get hired for the career of their dreams?

    • ANSWER:
You can get hired with that certificate. Those are pretty reputable items and so are online degrees. Don't expect a salary of more than about K a year maybe a little more or less. I bet you could get in as a tax consultant with HR Block. I know you do not need to be a cpa to file tax returns. That's a start and as you move along in your degree you can move up in the office. After a few years you can parlay all that experience into a pretty decent job at some corporation doing whatever it is accountants can do for them. As the years go on and the experience and education piles up, you go higher and higher.
Yes, absolutely, online courses are legit. Although, for at least one degree, you might want to consider a real university if you are able to. You can do it, good luck!

  42. QUESTION:
What kind of job can I get with an associates of science in accounting?
I have recently been accepted for an online college at which I chose to get an associates of science in accounting and was wondering if I may have made an error on the best proffesion. I want to make more then minumin wage and I don't want to continue working from one job to another trying to find the best an benefits. What kind of job would I be able to get with this degree?

    • ANSWER:
There are a number of possibilities, such as positions with companies in accounts receivable and payable, you can enter fields of insurance, manufacturing, service industries, hotel management, and the list goes on. Check out job websites like Hotjobs, or Monster and see what's out there. An AS degree in accounting is certainly valuable. Never give up until you find the right job, and you will. Good luck in your endeavors.

  43. QUESTION:
    Ashford University Online?
I got my Associates degree in Business Administration from a community college. I am thinking of going to Ashford University online to get my bachelors degree in Accounting but I have heard some good and bad things about getting a degree online.
So I was wondering since Ashford is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and so is New Mexico State University, could I possibly take the majority of the classes at Ashford and transfer them and take maybe three of four classes at NMSU to get a degree there? Or if not could I get my BS at Ashford and get a masters at NMSU? Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
forget online schools, go to a real one

  44. QUESTION:
What is a good online school?
I am thinking about getting my associates in accounting. Does anyone know a reputable online school for this type of degree? Also, do employers think negatively about an online degree vs. going to college?

    • ANSWER:
There is a huge difference between an "online university" and a brick and mortar school. These "online universities" (like University of Phoenix, AIU, Capella, etc.) are disreputable, and applications listing degrees from these institutions find themselves at the bottom of the pile. I actually know a Human Resource manager at a Fortune 500 company who throws them away.

If you must study online, you must definitely do it the smart way -- through a reputable brick and mortar school that offers distance education. Many state universities are now doing this. The University of Iowa, the University of Maryland, and Penn State University all come to mind.
      '
Degrees through these fine schools will be much more respected than any piece of paper issued by AIU or Phoenix. Earning these degrees will also likely be much cheaper!

Follow these links which provide accurate listings of all state and private colleges that are currently providing distance education programs.

      Best wishes to you!

  45. QUESTION:
i heard universityof phoenix is a bad school?
Ive just enrolled to university of phoenix axia program and im planning on doing the online classes for my associates degree for accounting. Im supposed to start classes next week, and ive already signed all the paperwork and everything. I went online to get the address of the campus here in colorado springs (google) and this ripoffreports site came up and mentioned university of phoenix. I read alot of the bad reports on there, and now im having second thoughts about going that that school. Is it too late for me to get out of it now, and just go to my local community college, becuase i really dont want to risk getting ripped off like some of those other people did. Please give me your input and tell me if i can still back out

    • ANSWER:
Hmmm, that doesn't sound good to me, if I were you I'd quit ASAP and get your money back and go to a real school.

I've heard (I don't know if it was U of P) of those online colleges just handing out degrees and not really requiring the students to take classes. If you want to do an online course there are a lot of colleges that do have online classes (for credit). If you still want another experience try PCDI (I haven't heard anything bad about them) or a technical school.

On second thought, PCDI is about in the same boat, and doesn't look as good on a resume as a local community college or technical school/institute would look. So just go to a near by college/school/institute that hand out a real degree or certificate and it'll look better than those ripoffs gimmicks.

  46. QUESTION:
Can I apply for Army or Navy OCS with online degrees?
I have 3 associates degrees, a BBA in accounting and financing (attained online), and I am currently working on my Master's (MBA).
I am as of now enlisted in the Navy, and I was wondering if either the army or navy will accept online degrees, and what are the chances of me getting picked up.
So it is O.K. for the Navy to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to send somebody to Annapolis for a business degree, launch them in the fleet without knowledge of anything, but they will deny the enlisted a chance? get the fuck out of here
Mrsjvb, I know for a fact you do not know jack shit, you have given me answers before, such as I will not be able to finish my degrees in active duty about 2 years ago, and I am almost done with my Master's, F-U-C-K yourself

    • ANSWER:
It depends on the school accreditation, as others have mentioned. I know a prior enlisted Navy guy who was accepted to Navy OCS with a BA in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, so it's certainly not impossible especially if you've done well in your classes. I think the tech thing is a myth anyway... at least half of my OCS class were non technical majors (everything from business to psychology to communications to history). The fact that you are almost done with your Master's will be a giant plus to you as well.

      Good luck! :)

  47. QUESTION:
I got my Associate's degree online in Business Administration (I will graduate in March). I have been thinkin
about getting my Bachelor in Accounting/Finance, but every time I look at the loans, I get discourage. And I don't really want to work as an accountant or a financial adviser. I just want to have the degree for the sake of having and maybe later (When I become a Citizen) try to get a job with the federal government (My dream workplace). The loans are my main concern. I feel like I will work all my life to pay them back. Do you think I should continue? Or should I get it now while I'm young and in school, and use the degree in the future to get my Federal job?

    • ANSWER:
I would definitley get your degree now. The longer you wait the more it will cost to go back to school. Also if you're concerned about the cost, try finding a job within a universtiy. That is what I am doing and I am working on getting my masters for free (though I will have to pay taxes on the compensation, it is far less than I would pay by going it alone).

  48. QUESTION:
How will employers view a degree from Thomas Edison State College?
Yes I checked and this college is accredited. Its online and its a state college in NJ. Here is the website. http://www.tesc.edu/index.php

Right now I'm at community college getting an associate degree in accounting and working. A lot of the accounting classes are online so I'm very comfortable with the online model. I only have 18 credits to go until I graduate with my associate degree. I currently have a 3.5 GPA at community college. I want to work as an accounting clerk or bookkeeper for awhile and then become an entrepreneur.

I really want to get my bachelor's degree from Thomas Edison State College. My mom owned her small business until she retired, my dad was a marketing executive until he retired. I'm inspired by them. I really want to become a wedding planner. However if that doesn't work out it would be nice to go into the corporate world.

Any advice would be helpful. I live in Seattle if that helps.

    • ANSWER:
Most employers outside of NJ have never heard of any NJ state college other than Rutgers, so it should be fine.

  49. QUESTION:
    Online Universities- accounting course?
    hi,
does anyone know any cheap university for accounting courses. I have to finish 150- semester hour in accounting and other electivies....i have associate degree and i just wanna finish rest of them asap doesnt matter what grade i am gonna get since all i have to do is pass the course to sit for CPA exam..please let me know..

    • ANSWER:
Your uni needs to be regionally accredited, or I believe you can't sit for the CPA exam. So be careful, and only go to reputable, regionally accredited online programs.

The cheapest uni for you will be a state college or state university in your home state - a public college in your home state. You'd qualify for the lower, in-state rate on tuition, at a public school. And many of them have online degrees now - check their websites to see if those in your state do.

If not, then a reputable uni that's quite reasonably priced re: online programs, and which offers BS degrees in accounting, is Southern New Hampshire U.

  50. QUESTION:

(fastweb is one of them so please don't suggest it)

    • ANSWER:
